In 2023, I became fixated on the absurdity of Burning Man trucking ice in from Reno and Sacramento: hundreds of miles, on diesel-powered refrigerator 18-wheelers, packed in disposable plastic bags, and then selling it via Apple Pay and Google Pay. It ran against both the “leave no trace” sustainbility principle and the decommodification principle. I joked about making all our ice on-playa; a campmate said it would take the commercialization of nuclear fusion to achieve that. I looked up at the giant fusion reactor screaming down on us from the sky, and decided that would be good enough. That moment was the inception of Ice Ice Maybe, a camp built around sustainable, decommodified ice. My frineds and I converted an old gas-generator setup into a fully solar-powered system. In our first year we produced about 250 lbs of ice; in the second, 400 lbs: enough to run all our smoothie, snow cone, and slushy gifting events without buying a single bag, all while powering the entire camp with solar.
